Mountain bike tires are thicker than road bike tires, designed for rocky terrain. You can of course use a mountain bike for road cycling but this isn't supposed to be their primary use.

Be sure to allow room between the crossbar and yourself. When you choose your bike, official statement adjust the seat up a few inches from the crossbar and then sit on the bike. Sit on it and make sure you can rest your feet flat to the ground. Different bikes will need differing clearance amounts. For example a touring bike will require around an inch. If you are buying a mountain bike you’ll want more—three inches or so between you and the crossbar.

When looking for a bike your main goal is to find one that suits you physically. That is the primary goal of anyone who chooses cycling as their primary form of transportation. Comfort and safety are both very important.
